The six fluffy Owlets come from two breeding pairs and include three females and three males between five and seven weeks old.
Once found, the chicks were carefully removed from the nest for a thorough exam. The staff recorded the weight, wing feather development, body condition, and wing length, as well as noting any unique markings, which help to determine each chick’s age and gender. The Owlets were then banded by placing a metal ring on the ankles, which will identify each Owl if it is captured in the future. The chicks were then safely returned to their nest boxes. Marwell has successfully supported 16 Owlets since 2014, when it started working with the South Downs National Park Authority and the Hawk Conservancy Trust to monitor Barn Owl populations within the local landscape as part of the Barn Owl Box scheme (Project BOB). The project records the breeding success and aims to understand the survival and wider movements of Barn Owls. As part of Marwell’s ongoing commitment to restore habitats, the charity manages more than 100 acres of grassland to create an ideal hunting habitat for this important farmland bird. No pesticides or fertilizers are used on the land. Voles, Shrews, and Mice thrive in this habitat, providing ample food for the Owl families. A single Barn Owl typically eats three to four prey items each night. Barn Owls live on every continent except Antarctica. The Barn Owl’s heart-shaped face, or ‘facial disk’, collects and directs sound toward the inner ears, which are situated inside the facial disk just behind the eyes. As a result, Barn Owls’ hearing is the most sensitive of any animal ever tested. Owlets develop rapidly. By three weeks of age, they can swallow a whole Shrew or small Mouse. At eight to nine weeks, they begin taking practice flights. At 13 to 14 weeks old, Owlets have reached adult size and leave the nest to find their own home range. See more photos below.
The discovery unlocks the potential to create a naturally derived pain treatment that would offer potent relief without the risk of addiction of other painkillers. “There’s clearly a need to develop alternatives for relief of acute and chronic pain that go beyond opioids,” said Prof. Tariq Akhtar, Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, who worked on the study with MCB professor Steven Rothstein. “These molecules are non-psychoactive and they target the inflammation at the source, making them ideal painkillers.” Using a combination of biochemistry and genomics, the researchers were able to determine how cannabis makes two important molecules called cannflavin A and cannflavin B. Known as “flavonoids,” cannflavins A and B were first identified in 1985, when research verified they provide anti-inflammatory benefits that were nearly 30 times more effective gram-for-gram than acetylsalicylic acid (sold as Aspirin). However, further investigation into the molecules stalled for decades in part because research on cannabis was highly regulated. With cannabis now legal in Canada and genomics research greatly advanced, Akhtar and Rothstein decided to analyze cannabis to understand how Cannabis sativa biosynthesizes cannflavins. Yep, that’s right. I’m going back to school–as a part-time Spanish teacher at a local high school. I’m excited! It’s been thirteen years since I’ve had a class of my own, so I’m reevaluating my wardrobe, including my collection of footwear. Yes, I have plenty of sandals, sneakers and ankle boots, but I’m missing that one pair of perfect teacher shoes–professional, comfortable yet with unique styling. The Rieker Sina 78 fills that gap in my wardrobe. The first thing I notice when slipping my feet into the Rieker Sina 78 is the glove-like fit. My toes spread out comfortably thanks to the slight stretchiness of the soft woven upper, yet the shoe hugs the back of my heel (there’s elastic goring in the back strap): a great option for those with wide forefoot/narrow heel combination, or for feet that swell during the day. Fortunately, the Rieker Sina’s woven upper allows feet to breathe while still providing toe coverage. Win win. The 1.5″ architectural heel is perfect–just enough lift without the uncomfortable pressure on forefoot and knees. The footbed is lightly cushioned and flexible. If you’re used to layers of memory foam cushioning or a thick outsole, this is not the shoe for you (especially if you have painful hallux rigidus, the forefoot is too flexible). There is definiately a “one-with-the-ground” feel to the Rieker Sina 78 so I might add a ball-of-foot cushion. Don’t worry about slipping on smooth floors, the Rieker Sina 78 has a nicely textured polyurethane outsole that grips slippery flooring well. If you have a high volume foot as I do, you may be wondering if the scalloped topline irritates the top of the foot. I haven’t found this to be true. The leather is buttery soft and doesn’t dig into the feet. I imagine that even low volume feet would get a secure fit in this shoe. As far as fit, I usually wear a 10 and fine the euro 41 to fit me perfectly (although Zappos suggests a 42 for size 10, which would have been too big). Find the Rieker Sina 78 in euro sizes 36-42 for $125 from Zappos, Amazon, Shoes.com, Google Express and Nordstrom. The opinions are completely our own based on experience. When I first opened the box containing my new Naot Leveche ankle boots, my countenance dropped a little. My initial enthusiasm waned as I considered the criss-cross cut outs: was there too much going on? But once I slipped them on with my favorite pair of raw hem jeans, I got that Naot fangirl feeling back. These booties will go places this fall. I love them. The Naot Leveche ankle boot kicks any basic outfit up a few notches with its criss-cross woven straps up the vamp. If you’re wondering if that’s my naked foot showing through the boot, it isn’t. Naot added a panel of soft stone-colored nubuck that shows through the woven upper. This feature allows the boot to be worn in colder weather. A diagonally set zipper and stacked one-inch heel with slight beveled edge add to the overall sleek appearance of the Naot Leveche. Let’s talk about comfort. Naot footwear is handmade in northern Israel using the finest materials (read our in-depth brand review here). Their uniquely engineered insoles are a blend of natural latex and cork that are designed to replicate the shape of the foot. This is what I’ve come to know and love about Naot footwear and the Leveche is no exception. The footbed features moderate arch support, an indented heel cup, and is removable if you need to add your own orthotic. While I find the arch support noticeable, I know I’ll need a little more for days I’m on my feet. I removed the Naot insole and added my Tread Labs medium arch full-length insole (I like Tread Labs because they come in four arch heights and don’t take up much room in the forefoot of any shoe or boot). Even after adding an insole, I didn’t experience any slippage in the heel when walking. The heel height of one inch is perfect for providing a little lift. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, you may know that a heel of around one-inch is recommended for taking strain off the fascia. While the toe box isn’t wide like that of a Dansko clog, it is rounded and roomy enough to accommodate small bunions on a slightly narrow to medium width foot. I wouldn’t recommend the Naot Leveche for wider feet. As far as fit, I find the european size 41 best fits my size 10 feet (I’m on the smaller side of 10). You may want to order up if you plan on wearing with your own orthotic. The Leveche is part of Naot’s Aura collection of dressier ankle boots. In fact, if you’re not into the woven details of the Leveche, check out the Naot Helm (basically the same boot without the cutouts).Find the Naot Leveche ankle boot in black, amber and blue nubuck, sizes 35-42 (4-11) for $224.95 from Zappos, Nordstrom, Google Express and Shoes.com. If you need help finding a Naot retailer near you, call 1-800-NAOT-USA for assistance. Be sure to spray your new Naots with nubuck protector to protect them from elemental damage. About the Author
The post Naot Leveche Review: Walk a While in This Woven Wonder Bootie! appeared first on TepuyMagazine. via TepuyMagazine https://ift.tt/2OlgXHz This is Jill’s review of the Hotter Resort sandal (sponsored by Hotter.com). The opinions are completely her own based on experience. Jill is currently a busy stay-at-home mom to four children, but is slowly re-entering the educational workforce. She finds footwear such as the Resort sandals from Hotter to be the perfect option to wear on spring days as we ease into warmer weather. They provide comfort yet are current with fashion. In fact, she received numerous compliments when wearing them to a recent women’s retreat. Overall, Jill finds the Hotter Resort sandal to be very comfortable due to its dense cushioning and contoured footbed with moderate arch support–even on days where she’s on her feet for extended amounts of time. The toe post doesn’t irritate her feet as it can in other thong-type sandals. Jill typically wears a size 10 medium width shoe and finds the Resort sandal to run true to size. She has a fairly high arch that the sandals support well (not quite as enhanced as Birkenstock or Vionic). She noticed that her big toe does tend to push over the edge of the sandal as she pronates a bit when walking (something to keep in mind if this is your issue also). The Hotter Resort sandal features an adjustable strap over the instep of the foot. If your foot runs narrow, you may have to add another hole to the strap (any local shoe shop should be able to add this). You can find the Hotter Resort sandal in sizes 5-11, medium and wide widths for $85 from Hotter.com (now offering 30% off site-wide plus free tracked shipping). The post Hotter Resort Sandals : The Essential Summer Slip-On appeared first on TepuyMagazine. via TepuyMagazine https://ift.tt/2Yb2uTd Ever since being a young adolescent, I have loved an all-white sneaker. For me, they go with everything. And that ‘everything’ literally means everything. I probably wouldn’t wear it with a light wool double-breasted suit. But a single button one, I would for sure. Now I know that some people might roll in their grave reading that, but that’s just me. All jokes aside, when it comes to Summer wear or even something a bit heavier but on the smart casual side of things, I really don’t think that wearing a white sneaker out of the reach for most outfits. Being white, it tends to complement any color of trousers, from khaki to navy, to olive and even black. There really isn’t any color that an all-white sneaker does not go with. And on top of that, you can wear them with shorts too. It is literally the most versatile pair of shoes there is. Nearly like a brown suede loafer. But more comfortable and built for long-distance wear. We offer our Olympia at a very competitive price of $195 (£175 ex vat £145.83 on the UK site). At the quality that you are getting in return, you really cannot beat that. I dare you to tell me who offers better? And remember, we have bundled deals on our sneaker.
