Two Humboldt Penguin chicks hatched at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo on May 1 and May 4. The chicks made their public debut in early June. The chicks are both males and are named Peru and Lima (“Lee-ma”) in honor of their native habitat off the coast of Peru.
Both chicks are the offspring of Penguin parents Frederico and Poquita. Foster parents Venti and Isa are helping to raise the older chick, Peru, to give both chicks a strong start. The adults will feed the chicks until they are big enough to take fish directly from keepers. Penguins at the zoo are hand-fed twice a day so animal care staff can keep records of how much food each bird consumes. Weighing only a few ounces at hatching, the chicks have grown rapidly. Each now weighs well over five pounds. The new chicks bring the number of birds in the zoo’s Humboldt Penguin colony to 34. They will remain off exhibit with their parents until their waterproof feathers come in, then they will practice their swimming skills in the small indoor pool before joining the rest of the colony later this year. Zoo Director Ted Fox said the new chicks were bred as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) for Humboldt Penguins overseen by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. More than 55 Penguin chicks have hatched at the zoo since it joined the SSP in 2005, and many have gone to other AZA institutions to help preserve the species. Humboldt Penguins are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In historic times, their nesting grounds were destroyed by guano mining, where deposits of their excrement were dug up and sold as fertilizer. In recent decades, changes in ocean temperatures, ocean acidification, and overfishing in the Penguins’ hunting waters have pushed populations even lower. Today, about 32,000 mature individuals are estimated to live on the coasts of Peru and Chile. The post Penguin Chicks Add to Conservation Success at Rosamond Gifford Zoo appeared first on TepuyMagazine. via TepuyMagazine https://ift.tt/2Lp6yYt After the newest litter of European Wolves began emerging from their den a few weeks ago, keepers at Longleat Safari Park weren’t exactly sure how many pups were in the litter. They eventually determined that parents Eliska and Jango were raising seven pups!
Once it was known that pups had been born, the care team allowed the family to bond without any interference from staff. Keepers would occasionally glimpse the pups when Eliska and Jango moved the pups between three separate underground dens in their woodland enclosure. “As the pups spend their first few weeks underground it makes it very difficult to work out exactly how many there are. Initially we thought there were only five, so to discover there’s actually seven of them was a wonderful bonus,” said Longleat’s team manager for carnivores, Amy Waller. The pups, which weighed less than a pound when born, are now able to eat small amounts of meat but will not be fully weaned until eight to 10 weeks of age. This is the second litter born at the Safari Park in the last year and boosts the pack size to 14. “The pups’ older siblings have also been getting involved with transporting them from den to den but have still not entirely got the hang of holding them the right way up so mum and dad do have to occasionally intervene,” added Amy. Wolf packs have a highly complex social structure and each individual knows its place in the pack hierarchy. In the wild, wolves depend on cooperation within the pack for survival, both in hunting and in raising offspring. Wild Wolves were eradicated from most of Western Europe in the 19th century and they have been extinct throughout the United Kingdom for more than 250 years. Thanks to several Wolf reintroduction programs, the wild Wolf population in Europe is now thought to include 12,000 individuals in 28 countries. There are established packs in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain and Italy with numbers also on the rise in parts of France and Germany. In 2011, Wolves were also reported in Belgium and the Netherlands. See more pup pics below!

The Venezuelan government—under Maduro and previously under Chávez—has stacked the courts with judges who make no pretense of independence.
The government has been repressing dissent through often-violent crackdowns on street protests, jailing opponents, and prosecuting civilians in military courts. It has also stripped power from the opposition-led legislature.
Due to severe shortages of medicines, medical supplies, and food, many Venezuelans cannot adequately feed their families or access the most basic healthcare. In response to the human rights and humanitarian crisis, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans are fleeing the country. Other persistent concerns include poor prison conditions, impunity for human rights violations, and harassment by government officials of human rights defenders and independent media outlets. The post Red, White and Blue Shoes for a Comfy, Happy 4th of July! appeared first on TepuyMagazine. via TepuyMagazine https://ift.tt/2LprluQ We recently received a request from one of our Facebook fans. She needs a supportive pair of sandals for warm weather (preferably under $125), but she has high arches and plantar fasciitis. Our reader also suffers from neuropathy, so her feet are sensitive to rough seams and too-tight straps. Turning to our readers for recommendations always leads to more possibilities than I myself can conjure, so we’re thankful for so many great recommendations for sandals for high arches and plantar fasciitis. Let’s get started: Laura recommends the Aetrex Jillian quarter-strap sandal saying it is her sandal of choice for high arches. It’s approved by the AMPA (American Medical Podiatric Association), and for good reason. It features orthotic-like support for the arches along with a deep heel cup for stability and metatarsal bar for ball-of-foot support. A memory foam-covered footbed and adjustable straps add to the overall comfort of the Jillian sandal. Find the Aetrex Jillian in a variety of colors, sizes 5-11 (even a 10.5) for $109.95 from Zappos, Shoes.com and Amazon. After publishing, I came across the Aetrex Bethany with smoother straps, which might feel better on feet with neuropathy. Noreen and Joanne suggest Alegria sandals, specifically the Playa, Kleo and Viki models. Noreen likes the Playa sandal for its excellent cushioning–in fact, we’ve reviewed the Playa sandal previously, see it here. But for enhanced arch support, she prefers the Alegria Kleo with its rocker sole and three adjustable straps for a customized fit. Find the Kleo in euro sizes 35-42 (5-11) for $119.95 from Zappos, Find a deal at Amazon, and 6pm.com. Joanne recommends the Alegria Viki . As she words it, the Viki is “scooped out away from the toe line,” so shouldn’t irritate sensitive toes. Traci raves about Taos sandals, “They are the most comfortable sandals I ever owned! I bought my first pair when I was suffering from plantar fasciitis. They have great arch support, cushioning, and adjustable straps.” Pictured above is the Taos Zen sport sandal with arch, metatarsal and heel support. The footbed is covered in Cool Recovery Foam® which not only cushions the soles but contains a cooling gel to keep feet comfortable on hot days. Find the Taos Zen in sizes 6-11 for $120 from TaosFootwear.com, Zappos, Nordstrom and Amazon. You can’t beat Skechers for affordable comfort. These cute sports sandals were recommended by our reader Ellen…and they’re between $39-50 depending on the store! Great cushioning, good support and lots of 5 star reviews. Find the Skechers Performance On-the-Go in sizes 5-11, medium and wide widths (get the wide width if you need more room for bunions) for $39.99-50 from Zappos, Amazon, RackRoomShoes.com, and Famous Footwear. The post 5+ Reader-Recommended Hot Weather Sandals for High Arches appeared first on TepuyMagazine. via TepuyMagazine https://ift.tt/2xndSve More towards my recent blog post about Athleisure and how it is destroying a ‘sense of dress’ across the world, we enter a new realm of craziness with the latest invention of the ‘Flip Shoe.’ Designed to be a cross breed between a shoe and a flip flop, the world of comfort takes it one step further with what I feel is the ultimate abomination on the idea of what footwear should be and/or is. Again, society is simply going overkill with this idea of comfort and needing to take it to a constant ‘next level.’ But this is most prominent in the USA. Europeans still wear dress shoes on a daily basis. Not all of them, of course, but a good majority at least when it comes to workwear, and even so, for their days off. The strict codes of dress are still prominent in their society and thankfully put in place. But here in the States, all hell has broken loose with the idea of what can and should be worn to work or for your daily use. Again, I get wanting to be comfortable. In my apartment, I wear Crocs, shorts (in Summer), sweat pants (in winter) and a t-shirt. But I don’t leave the house like that. And it is not because I care about what others think. Because I don’t. And I won’t lie if I have to pop to the corner store 20 steps from my apartment I will throw on my tracksuit purchased at Uniqlo with a pair of sneakers. But the Crocs don’t and won’t ever leave the apartment. Comfort in the home is one thing. Comfort on the streets is another. I feel comfortable in public in a very different standard of dress, as stated below: Summer: 1. Dress Loafers, 2. Polo Shirt or Button up either with short sleeves or sleeves rolled up on long one and 3. Jeans/Chinos Winter: 1. Leather/Rubber soled boots (chelseas, chukkas, oxford boots etc), 2. Button up oxford shirt and/or roll neck sweater and 3. Jeans/Flannel trousers And that is my casual comfort wear. For dress up, of course, one goes for a suit. So I ask myself, what purpose do these shoes really serve? Why do they exist? Do we really need a flip flop that gives the support of a shoe? No, we really don’t. Because I have and will always hate the idea of men showing off their feet in public. Wearing flip flops should be reserved for the beach and maybe, just maybe if you live on an island where the weather is tropical and the idea of wearing proper attire only equates to tons of bodily sweat. Other than that, your feet should not be displayed in the city as there is no real good reason for that (mainly for men). So here is the new Link Shoe. I will be curious to see how well it sells and just how much further the USA culture kills smart dressing with the idea of comfort living every second of your life. RelatedThe post Link Flip Shoes – Next Generation Laziness appeared first on TepuyMagazine. via TepuyMagazine https://ift.tt/2LwI5R7 There are two things that I love: 1. Braided leather and 2. Unique Designs. The Schifano loafer by Barbanera gives us both of those things and is one of my favorite models released this Summer. The internet is filled with your typical suede penny loafers and as much as I appreciate them, I am quite bored of seeing the same thing on a different last shape by a different maker for a different price. And that is what I love about Barbanera. They do things differently. They don’t give you the same thing everyone else has. They make something completely unique and they can proudly say that no one else is offering anything like the Schifano model! The Rimbaud, plain braided loafer on the other hand is a more classic make but no one is doing it in black or navy braided leather. Both of these models are currently on sale for €340 and €360 Happy Shopping! -Justin https://www.barbanerastyle.com/product-category/shoes/loafers/ RelatedBarbanera Barbanera shoes braided leather braided loafers Braided Shoes Dress Shoes Italian Shoemakers Italian Style The post Braided Loafers by Barbanera – Summer Wear Italian Style! appeared first on TepuyMagazine. via TepuyMagazine https://ift.tt/2xm2PCO Lulu Lemon has single-handedly destroyed the idea of elegance and replaced it with ‘comfort.’ As a business, I can’t knock them. They killed it, literally. They came in, selling the idea of comfort to women and then slowly crept over and took men with them. And did a good job at it. I have to tip my hat to the owner for making their dreams happen. Problem is, it has gotten so far that more and more people are wearing gym clothes in the streets than actual clothes and the majority of them are not going to the gym, nor working out. They are simply in their days’ attire. And that is what frightens me. As a society, we have become so disgustingly lazy and with victim mentalities. People ask themselves ‘why shouldn’t I be comfortable? Why shouldn’t I dress how I want?’ And yes, you should be free to do what you want, but of course within reason. People forget that certain systems are put in place for a reason. A government is created to maintain order (in theory). Because people, being inherently selfish due to the Ego, would simply create chaos without an organized structure there to create balance and order. A dress-code is the same. It is there for a reason. Sometimes it may suck, but in the long run, its idea is greater than the alternative. Unfortunately we as people, more often than not, absorb information and then make a judgment on that information through visual intake. For example, if a young man sees his father wearing smart dress shoes his whole life, chances are that he will also follow suit when he gets older. If he sees his father wearing crocs…..well you get the idea. And while not a stone cold rule, the ratio of this rule is greater towards replication than rebellion. It is called groupthink when this happens in great numbers as people often follow what others do, like if you are walking down the street and see 4-5 people all start running. Chances are you will start running too without even knowing why. Same thing happened when you found yourself buying gym clothes for your daily wear. You walked into that shop, bought those clothes and did so because your subconscious told you that if all of these people in the street can do it then so can you, not to mention all of the subliminal marketing that you must have been subjected to. So now, a few early Athleisure wearers have created a society of people wearing their gym clothes daily in the streets. Spandex, tights, athletic bras, gym shorts, running shoes etc, have replaced dresses, nice blouses, elegant shorts, cotton trousers, oxford shirts, polo’s, smart shoes etc. You see this trend greater in women than in men but it is creeping over and that is what frightens me. Couples are out and about on their days off, walking their dogs or pushing their baby strollers wearing clothes as if they just came from the gym. But they didn’t. At least I pray that a couple did not take their baby to the gym. That would be even scarier. And for me, this entire trend is a problem. It completely destroys the idea of elegance and looking smart. And the need for leather soled shoes. As ‘The Shoe Snob’ I have to stand against it. It is ugly, it is sad, and it is just downright wrong in my opinion. I completely get wanting to be comfortable. I really do. I want to be comfortable too. But I also get the idea of being respectable. The idea of dressing nice is showing respect for others, for society and in reality for yourself. Being comfortable everywhere without care of societal rules or ideas is selfish. This entire trend is a selfish one. Question is, will we ever go back to dressing smarter or is this the 1st step towards space clothes that you see on Star Trek and all of those movies from the past that showed the future where everyone was wearing gym like clothing????
